Blue Ridge Chapter BMW CCA hosts teen driving program at RIR courtesy of Sue Blasko, The Tire Rack One of our most precious resources, our teens, are being taken from us every year as victims in car crashes – more than 5,000 a year. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of American youths aged 16 to 19 and one that accounts for more than 40 percent of fatalities in that age bracket. To reduce that number, on Nov. 15 at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, the BMW Car Club of America will host a Tire Rack Street Survival teen-driving school conducted by a group of highly skilled volunteer instructors. Tire Rack Street Survival® is a national driver education program that teaches teens the skills they need to stay alive behind the wheel. Unlike traditional novice driver education programs based on classroom theory and simple maneuvers, the Tire Rack Street Survival® program improves driver competence through hands-on experiences in real-world driving situations. Teenagers learn from knowledgeable driving instructors how their actions govern a car’s responses, what the limits of their vehicles are, and how to avoid accidents entirely. Unlike other advanced driving schools, students use their own vehicles so that the skills they learn can be directly translated to their own daily driving experiences. The Tire Rack Street Survival® program is open to permitted and licensed drivers ages 16-21. Registration forms can be found online at http://www.streetsurvival.org. The cost is $60 per student and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates. The program will take place at Richmond International Raceway, located at 600 E. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 7:30 am - 4:30 pm. Space is limited and registration is required. (0) Comments • Email This Article |
