Thursday, Dec. 11
Gardening for Winter Interest from 2-4 pm; Presented by Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, the free seminar held at Clover Hill Library, located at 6701 Deer Run Dr., focuses on the landscape being just as appealing in winter as in other seasons. This program will provide great ideas for winter garden gazing. Seating is limited, so registration is required by calling (804) 751-4401.


Creating Holiday Crafts with Greenery from the Garden from 7-9 p.m. Presented by Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, the free seminar held at Clover Hill Library, located at 6701 Deer Run Dr., focuses on Decorating resources are right in your backyard! Includes a small-craft demo on ways to use greenery for holiday décor. Seating is limited, so registration is required by calling (804) 751-4401.


Friday, Dec. 12
SCORE, Counselors to America’s Small Business, will present a small business workshop for owners and prospective owners of small business from 7:45 am to 4:30 pm at the Capital One Town Center Building, 15000 Capital One Dr., in Richmond.
These workshops are presented monthly and are designed to help the small business owner: Prepare their business plan; Understand the various types of Business Entities; Review Web Basics; Learn about the Sources Of Capital; Collect information on Marketing and Sales Tips plus much more. An experienced faculty from the business community will present the various segments of the workshop. The Cosby Titan Band will present their Holiday Concert 7:30 pm in the Cosby Theater.  All seats are $5.  The 110-member Titan Band, Percussion Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble will be featured in this concert.  The show should run about one hour and a reception will follow in the school commons.
A wide variety of musical styles will be covered this evening.  The “musical menu” consists of :“The Fairest of the Fair March” by Sousa, “Rejouissance” by Curnow, “Perthshire Majesty” by Hazo, “Defying Gravity” by Stephen Reineke, “Sleigh Ride”  by Leroy Anderson, “All is Calm” as by Robert W. Smith,  and “Christmas Music for Winds” arranged by James Ployhar.  The Jazz Ensemble will perform some classic big-band styled selections.   
The Titan Band, in only their third year of existence, has amassed an impressive history.  The band earned a unanimous rating of “Superior” at the state concert festival last year and earned a rating of “Excellent” at the state marching festival this October. The band also performed by invitation at a home game for the University of Richmond in October 2007.  The band performed in Orlando Florida in April 2008 as a part of the “Dreams Come True” Parade at Walt Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom.  This selection can as a result of competitive screening. 


December 13-14
Northfield Foundation will be opening the doors to their residential facility on Dec. 13 and 14 for a public open house.  The community is invited to come out and tour the renovation and space plans for the 9,500 sq. ft. historical plantation, which will soon be a home to 12 girls in crisis. Northfield Foundation is a non-profit, Christian home for girls between the ages of 13 and 21 who are suffering from eating disorders or unplanned pregnancies. A “giving tree” will be available at the open house, which will allow individuals to fill specific needs for the home.  Needs range from vacuum cleaners to sheets to shingles.  To find a complete list of the needs at Northfield Foundation, visit http://www.northfieldfoundation.org. Saturday, Dec. 13
The 16th annual James River Parade of Lights, sponsored by the James River Advisory Council, will be held Saturday evening, Dec. 13. This year’s theme is “Saluting our Military on the Historic James,” chosen to honor the many men and women serving their country, many of whom will have to spend the holidays away from their families and friends. Festively decorated boats will cruise the parade route from the city of Richmond to Chesterfield and Henrico counties. Over the years, the Parade of Lights has become a holiday tradition for people from throughout the region who gather at viewing sites along the James to view the parade and enjoy additional entertainment at selected viewing locations.  Viewing sites: Richmond at Libby Hill Park, corner of 28th and East Franklin streets, entertainment at 4:30 p.m., parade viewing at 6 p.m. and Intermediate Terminal Dock, Dock and Water streets, parade viewing,  approximately 6 p.m. Chesterfield County at Dutch Gap Boat Landing, 441 Coxendale Road, parade viewing, 7:45- 8:15 p.m. and Henricus Historical Park, 251 Henricus Park Road, entertainment, 5:30 p.m., parade viewing, 8-8:30 p.m. Henrico County at Osborne Park and Boat Landing, 9680 Osborne Turnpike, entertainment, 5:30 p.m., parade viewing, 7-7:30 p.m.

Author Wendy S. Otto Book Signing Event from 2 – 4 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, located at 4600 Commonwealth Center Pkwy. in Midlothian. Otto will be available to sign copies of her book, “The Lost Christmas Tree.“

Sunday, Dec. 14
Core, a Community of Retailers, is sponsoring a Holiday House Tour to benefit Family Lifeline from 12:30 – 4:30 pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour five fabulous homes in the Midlothian/Powhatan area. While all of the homes will offer creative ideas for redefining your overall home, they will also showcase festive holiday decorations by local designers. Area musicians and caterers will also provide music and gourmet treats.

Tuesday, Dec. 16
The Virginia Folk Music Association and the Brandermill Church will hold a Christmas “Jam” and Food Drive from 7-10 p.m., at the Brandermill Church, (4500 Millridge Pkwy). Get into the spirit of the season with seasonal and bluegrass music and light refreshments. All food and monetary donations will go to the Virginia Food Bank. Donations will also be accepted at the Brandermill Church, December 8-16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This event is free and is open to the public. Mothers, daughters, and granddaughters will gather at 7:30 a.m. in the Midlothian Middle Library to hear “Confessions of a Snow Queen”. Donna Deekens, who was the Miller & Rhoads Snow Queen from 1971-1991 will share her humorous experiences with children and adults alike.  Participants will enjoy a hot chocolate bar, reindeer cake and chocolate snowflakes.

Wednesday, Dec. 17
The Chesterfield Women’s League, a local service and social club, will feature Stephen Dalton owner of Half-Baked Ideas. Stephen has started creating mixed-media jewelry since a spinal cord injury forced him to use a wheelchair. He sells his unique, one of a kind jewelry at dozens of art shows each year. Stephen will demonstrate how he creates his jewelry and will also offer some for sale. It’s a great way to do a little Christmas shopping! There will also be a holiday party and refreshments will be served. A Secret Santa gift exchange is optional – just bring a wrapped $15 gift to participate. This event will be held at the Foxfire Club House at 5536 Fox Light Parkway in Moseley.  Doors open at 9:30 a.m. The meeting and presentation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The meeting is open to members, guests and those interested in the League. What’s the Buzz? Protecting Pollinators Workshop from 1-3 p.m. Join Master Gardeners and the Richmond Audubon Society to learn about the beautiful birds that visit the area. The program is held at the Rockwood Nature Center, located in Chesterfield County’s Rockwood Park. Did you know that without a tiny little fly there would be no chocolate in the world? Or that bees can’t see the color red? Learn all about pollinators, the vital roles they play, and what you can do to protect them. This workshop includes a craft project to encourage pollinators in the backyard. A parent or guardian is required to accompany each child. The Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery from 5 to 6 p.m.
Healthy Discoveries with the Docs educational seminar series presented by the VCU Medical Center will feature Dr. Silas Chikunguwo with the VCU Surgical Weight Loss Center. Learn about the various options and benefits of weight loss surgery. Pruning Crape Myrtle from 4-6 pm or 7-9 pm; Presented by Chesterfield County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners, the free seminar held at Clover Hill Library, located at 6701 Deer Run Dr. Crape Myrtle will bloom longer and more vigorously when pruned correctly; learn the ‘how to’ with the help of an expert pruner. Everyone Needs a Home! Build a Birdhouse Workshop from 1-3 p.m. Join Master Gardeners and the Richmond Audubon Society to learn about the beautiful birds that visit the area.
