The Maggie Walker Governor’s School’s Academic Team won the 2010 High School National Championship Tournament sponsored by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT). 200 of the best academic teams in the nation competed in the tournament over Memorial Day weekend in Chicago.

The winning team was comprised of captain Greg Tito ’10 (Henrico), Sarah Angelo ’10 (Henrico), Tommy Casalaspi ’11 (Chesterfield), and John Roach ’11 (Chesterfield).

“Winning such a prestigious national tournament is a real testament not just to the academic abilities of these students, but also to their dedication,” said Maggie Walker Director Fred S. Morton IV. “The entire school community couldn’t be more proud.”

Coach Dr. John Barnes, who also teaches mathematics at Maggie Walker, complimented the team on “their balanced knowledge and their willingness to study and work hard.”

The team defeated State College Area High School (Pennsylvania) in the final round. Other teams competing from Virginia include Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Fairfax) and George Mason High School (Falls Church).
