Millwood School Students Learn Off Campus Published: October 31, 2008 content courtesy Millwood School October has seen a flurry of activity at Millwood School. The Junior Kindergarten through eighth grade school does not limit teaching and learning to classrooms, believing that hands-on understanding and observation of a subject compliments and supports classroom instruction. The Junior Kindergarteners have been studying the life cycle of pumpkins. Chesterfield Berry Farm offered the students an opportunity to taste pumpkin seeds and feel pumpkin pulp, and carve pumpkins into jack-o-lanterns. Kindergarteners have been studying farm life. A visit to Oakmulgee Dairy Farm in Amelia, VA brought their study to life! A visit to the Teddy Bear Clinic at St. Francis Hospital reinforced their study of community helpers and will lessen any apprehension they could have visiting an emergency room in the future. Both the second and fourth grade classes visited Richmond Metro Zoo. The observation and identification of species also leant itself to weigh estimation, and geography lessons! The 5th grade classes enjoyed a bus ride near Grottoes, VA where they visited Natural Chimneys and Grand Caverns and spent the day discovering rock and cave formations hundreds of millions of years old. The middle school took their annual trip to Challenge Discovery in Doswell, VA. There they were able to further develop teamwork, trust, and confidence, as well as learn the importance of cooperation and goal setting. A group of Millwood School’s middle school students took part in this year’s Prejudice Awareness Summit, co-sponsored by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities and the Junior League of Richmond. The purpose of the all-day session was to allow students to explore prejudice, identify useful conflict resolution strategies, and develop action plans to take the message back to their school. The teachers at Millwood School know their students learn by doing. This October they have been doing a lot! |
