Friday, March 12
The 3rd annual Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia Winter Lecture Series will take place in the Community Hall at Lucy Corr Village, 6800 Lucy Corr Blvd., in Chesterfield, 23832.On Friday, March 12, the focus shifts to Preservation Virginia’s Jamestown Rediscovery project with a lecture by Danny Schmidt, senior staff archeologist, entitled, “Recent Discoveries at the Fort.” The lectures are free to members of the Chesterfield Historical Society, $5 per lecture for non-members.  Each lecture starts at 7 p.m. and reservations are recommended.  Please call (804) 796-7003 to make reservations. Saturday, March 13
Chesterfield County Public Library hosts “Writers Workshop 2010” at Central Library at 9501 Lori Rd. Chesterfield. The session will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Seven authors will share their knowledge and experience of the craft and business of writing. Scheduled speakers include Laura Browder – Writing Moms: How Do They Find the Time?; Lee Gimpel - Writing Articles for Newspapers and Magazines:  The Art of the Query Letter; Helene Wagner – Writing a Screenplay; Linda Dini Jenkins- Why Independent Publishing Might Be Right for You, and The Art of Travel Poetry:  Crossing Borders and Writing from the Heart; Kristen King – Being an Online Writer; Patty Smith – Writing from Personal Experience; and Kris Spisak – Revealing History. Registration and payment are required. The $30 nonrefundable registration fee includes a box lunch and is due no later than Friday, March 5. Only cash or check payments will be accepted. Surf’s up and St. Edward-Epiphany School is calling all alumni, parents, supporters and friends to enjoy a little fun in the sun at its 18th annual auction and community gathering.  The “Sees in the Sand” event will be held on Saturday, March 13, in the St. Edward activity center, from 6:30 until 11 p.m.  A silent auction kicks off the event, followed by a live auction and $500 cash raffle.  The event will also feature D.J. music, catering by David Napier of David’s White House catering, cash bar, door prizes and beach games and contests.  Cost for the event is $30 per person in advance and $35 per person after March 1, which includes two complimentary drink tickets and an auction bid booklet.  Guests are encouraged to don festive beach attire to celebrate the theme. Want a fun, FREE evening of great music followed by ice cream sundaes??  Of course you do!!  Mark your calendars for the fifth annual “Sundaes on Saturday” Concert, March 13, 2010 at 7 PM , Salisbury Presbyterian Church, 13621 W. Salisbury Road, Midlothian, VA.  Sacred, secular and show tunes will be performed by Jubilation, Senior Adult Community Choir and the Salisbury Ringers, Adult Handbell Choir.  Over 350 attended last year!!  Fun for all ages!  Please don’t hesitate to call the Church office, (804) 794-5311, with any questions or for directions.

VaHomeschoolers is pleased to announce the 2010 Conference and Resource Fair set for March 12-13 at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. The Chesterfield Women’s League will meet at Foxfire Club House, 5532 Light Parkway, Moseley 23120.  A certified personal trainer will be leading a discussion about exercise and nutrition.  Doors open at 9:30 am. Saint Patrick’s Day concert with Adam Miller, one of the premier autoharpists in the world and one of the great interpreters of American folktales and folksongs from 7-8:30 p.m. at Central Library in Chesterfield. Join him in a celebration of the Irish roots of American folk culture. This program is recommended for adults and teens. After the performance, Miller’s recordings will be available for purchase and autographing. Registration is required and begins March 3. Hungrytown in Concert from 4- 5 p.m. at Central Library in Chesterfield. “Retro-folk” duo Rebecca Hall and Ken Anderson bring you traditional songs and new compositions rooted firmly in the folk tradition. Thursday, March 25
Information Chesterfield presents Kids in Nature at LaPrade Library, 9000 Hull Street Rd. Richmond, from 6:30-8 p.m. This program is based on the book “Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv, which contends that today’s children suffer from what the author calls Nature-Deficit Disorder. Sherry Callear and Lee Archard, Prevention Consultants with Chesterfield Mental Health Support Services, will focus on the possible effects on children of limited exposure to nature and outdoor time, as well as of increasing exposure to electronic media and indoor time. Audience members will learn possible actions families can take to nurture their children and strengthen family bonds.

April 3
The Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation is offering a beginning class in archery for adults aged 50 and over, Saturday, April 3, 10 a.m.-noon (course 19789). This class will teach form, safety and the proper use of equipment. Compound bows will be provided for use, which are adjustable to each individual’s draw length and skill. The fee for the class is $12, which includes practice time. The class will be held at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall, 10300 Courthouse Road. April 11
Whether for good or bad, we are all impacted by social networking. Providence United Methodist Church would like to respond to the changing dynamics of social networking.  The church is inviting you to a seminar on April 11, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. that will explore some of the issues surrounding the expanding world of social networking.  Dr. Stan Hargraves from Union-PSCE will lead a discussion on social networking trends that will offer parents and teens an opportunity to talk about the opportunities and challenges online communities present.  Participants will specifically explore Facebook, Twitter, and some of the new developments in social networking. The class will be held at Providence United Methodist Church (at 901 S. Providence Road, Richmond, VA 23236, 804-276-4289) in the sanctuary.  Dr. Hargraves is the author of Telling the Story: The Gospel in a Technological Age.

Children are invited to read to a Certified Therapy Dog with Read 2 Rover, a program started by Caring Canines that is designed to help children become better readers. The dogs sit quietly next to children while they read, thus providing comfort and companionship to children who struggle with reading or who simply want to improve their reading.
