Published Jan 28, 2010 Cyril E. Maire Jr. MAIRE, Cyril E. Jr., of Richmond, died January 4, 2010. He is survived by his widow, Alice Cook Stephens Maire; his daughters, Sarah Ann Shelko and husband, Joseph, Amiee Melissa Poe and husband, William, and Elise Ann Maire; daughter-in-law, Cathy Edwards Maire; three stepsons, George M. Stephens III and wife, Cathy, Thomas W. Stephens and wife, Capsen, and John P. Stephens and wife, Lynn; two sisters, Mrs. G. Edmond Massie and Betty Maire Herndon; numerous grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Bergmann Maire; and their son, Cyril E. Maire III. Cyril was born in Park Ridge, N.J. in 1922, moved to Richmond in 1938 and graduated from Glen Allen High School, Class of 1940. In 1944 he graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. During WWII, Cyril made five successful voyages to the European and Mediterranean war zones. At the end of the war, Cyril returned to George Washington University, Washington, D.C., to complete his education and resume his career in banking. Cyril retired in 1987 as an executive vice-president of Sovran Bank, a subsidiary of Bank of America. A memorial service will be held noon Friday, at Bon Air United Methodist Church, 1645 Buford Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Published Jan 05, 2010 ARMSTEAD, Joseph “Joe” Andrew ARMSTEAD, Joseph “Joe” Andrew, died on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at MCV Hospital. He was eight years old. Joseph was born April 9, 2001 in Chesterfield, Virginia. His parents are Kristina O. and Clifton Lee Armstead Jr. of Midlothian. In addition to his parents, Joseph is survived by his older brother, Clifton “Tripp” Lee Armstead III; his paternal great-grandmothers, Magdalene Armstead of Richmond and Elizabeth Reynolds of Midlothian; his maternal grandparents, Ellen J. Otto and Robert J. Otto, both of Orange, Va.; his paternal grandparents, Gloria Jean and Clifton Lee Armstead Sr. of Midlothian; his two aunts, Kirsten Otto Samuels and her husband, Charles, of Rapidan, Va. and Sharonda Lewis and her husband, Donnie, of Midlothian; one uncle, Andrew H. Otto of Orange; three cousins, Corinn and Koron Lewis of Midlothian and Charlotte G. Samuels of Rapidan; two very special childhood friends, Steven and Zach Newsome of Midlothian; a whole host of other uncles, aunts, cousins and family friends too numerous to mention; and his favorite dog, Casey. Joseph was a third grade student at J. B. Watkins Elementary School in Mrs. Behnke’s class. He loved school, his teachers and all of his school friends, especially Logan Georgel. Joseph played flag football and always watched the Dallas Cowboys with his dad and brother. He loved going to the beach every summer and was an accomplished boogie-boarder. When he wasn’t running, playing and having lots of fun, Joseph loved to snuggle up for a little quiet time with his mama. Joseph had a wonderful sense of humor, a beautiful smile and a wise, old soul. He was creative and inquisitive, thoughtful and kind, full of spunk and mischief. Joseph’s loving heart and amazing generosity of spirit was demonstrated by his wish to donate his organs. Joseph was loved dearly by his family and friends and his loss will be felt for a very long time. The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian, from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a Prayer Service starting at 7 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. Thursday, at Church of the Epiphany, 11000 Smoketree Drive. Published Jan 05, 2010 ARCHER, Dr. John Stanard Jr. ARCHER, Dr. John Stanard Jr., of Richmond, Va., died December 28, 2009. Born May 25, 1917, to the late John Stanard Archer and Jeanette Baird Jacob Archer. Preceded in death by his wife, Helen Kirtley Archer and sister, Lloyd Archer Kanary. He is survived by six children, Glen Enochs and husband, James; Elizabeth O’Ferrall and husband, McLain; John Archer lll and wife, Len; Cynthia Montague and husband, Peter; Tad Archer; Fielding Archer and wife, Meredyth; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Stanard graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity, and the Medical College of Virginia, where he did his residency in otolaryngology. He was a former staff member of the Richmond Eye Ear Nose and Throat Hospital; volunteer physician at McGuire Veterans Hospital and the Virginia State Penitentiary. A World War ll veteran, he was an army captain in the 70th field hospital attached to the Flying Tigers. Stanard served on the Vestry at St. James’s Episcopal Church, the board of the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and as President of the Parents Council of the Virginia Military Institute. “Poppy,” as he was known by his grandchildren, was a kind, wonderful and talented person who was loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5 at St. James’s Episcopal Church. Published Jan 05, 2010 Apple, David Bryan APPLE, David Bryan, 40, of Chesterfield County, departed this life far too soon as a result of a tragic accident on January 1, 2010. He was born September 9, 1969 in Richmond, Va. David is survived by two children, Cari K. Apple, age 22, and Bryan T. Apple, age 15, both of Richmond, Va; grandson, Lucas S. Adams; his mother and father, Barbara J. Apple and Hubert Apple Jr.; two brothers, Darren W. Apple and Daniel R. Apple; sister-in-law, Sandra S. Apple; and his girlfriend, Joyce Rivers; niece, Jennifer Apple - Hinton; and nephew, Christian Apple. David was a graduate of Meadowbrook High School (Class of ‘89) and attended Emmanuel College. David was the Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Miller Edge Corp. of West Grove, Pa. and had worked previously as Sales Manager for his family’s business, Apple Door Systems, Inc. David treasured his children, his family, his girlfriend and his strong Christian faith. David had a wonderful sense of humor and made people laugh wherever he went. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and always rooted for UVA. David was a talented musician and played the trumpet, drums and guitar. In his job, he always sought innovative ways to market his products and build long- term relationships. He was loved dearly by his family and friends and his loss will be felt for a very long time. The family will receive friends at Bliley’s-Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave, on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. and where a funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 12 noon with interment to follow in Dale Memorial park. Published Dec 27, 2009 Wheal, John A. WHEAL, John A., 88, of Midlothian, passed away December 25, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sue Wheal; son, Gregory J. Wheal and his wife, Dawn E. Wheal; grandchildren, Jessica Miles and her husband, Christian, Capt. Gregory C. Wheal, David M. Dieter; and a brother, Walter A. Wheal. He was a graduate of Milliken University and the University of Wyoming, and a member of the American Legion. SIMONSON, Harold L., of Midlothian, Va., born October 25, 1944 in Alexandria, Va., passed away December 23, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Ethel-May Simonson; one son, William “Buck” Simonson and his wife, Lois; his beloved grandson, Sterling Lot Simonson; two sisters, June Burns of Georgia and Dorothy Simonson of Leesburg, Va.; two brothers, Larry Simonson of Clarkesville, Va. and Stanley Simonson and his wife, Judy, of Chesterfield; one sister-in-law, Mary Kunkeli of Barryville, N.Y., plus numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was preceded in death by his mother, Ethel Buckley Curtis and father, John Willis Simonson; and one brother, Nolan Armentrout. As an active member of New Journey Church with the love of his family and friends, Harold fought a courageous battle for over three years, but never gave up his faith in God. Published in Richmond Times-Dispatch Published Dec 27, 2009 Cushing, Robert Mayhew CUSHING, Robert Mayhew, 28, died peacefully December 21, 2009 with his parents at his side. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Don Cushing and Robert Keating; and his younger sister, Lindsey Blair Cushing. He is survived by his parents, Bill and Gale Cushing; his grandmothers, Marjorie Cushing and Mary Lorma Keating, and a number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Robbie graduated from James River High School in 2000 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the College of Charleston in 2004. During his brief career, Robbie held several IT positions, the last being lead developer for Brilliance, LLC in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was especially proud of the many long and hard hours he put into the new Brilliance.com web site, set to launch very soon. Robbie loved his family very much and was very close to his sister. After Lindsey died in February, Robbie found the job in Florida. He loved his new work and Palm Beach and felt he had truly found his niche when he suffered a fatal stroke. He will be missed by many here on earth, but we are comforted in knowing he is now in heaven with his sister. A memorial service will take place Tuesday, December 29 at 11 a.m. at Bon Air United Methodist Church. Private interment at Hollywood Cemetery will follow at a later date. Published in Richmond Times-Dispatch Published Dec 27, 2009 Overton, James Arnold OVERTON, James Arnold, 59, formerly of North Richland Hills, Texas, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2009. He is survived by his stepmother, Katherine Overton Warren of Lafayette, Ind.; his son, James Ryan Overton; his daughter, Lindsay O. Hollins; two grandsons, Drew and Brooks Hollins, and many dear friends. James was born on October 7, 1950 in Lubbock, Texas. As an Air Force dependent, he lived all over the United States and Europe. He attended Weisbaden High School in Germany where he was rated the top left- handed pitcher in Europe and led the Weisbaden High School team to a European Championship. Later, he graduated from Surrattsville High School in Maryland. James was an Air Force Reservist and retired from Verizon after over 30 years in telecommuni-cations. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John J. Williams. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Williams Fero and her husband, Mark; sons, Larry Williams and his wife, Linda, and Allen Williams and his wife, Debbie; sister, Ann Green; and four grandchildren. Published Oct 20, 2009 TURNER, Robert Virginius TURNER, Robert Virginius, 87, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marguerite T. Turner. He is survived by his sons, Dr. John William Turner and Robert Taylor Turner, and their wives, Moira and Carol; grandchildren, Allison, Jonathan, Taylor, Morgan and Kendra; great-grandchildren, Logan and Lindsay Garrison. Dr. Turner was a retired educator who served as Assistant State Superintendent of Education, and was known as the “Father of Gifted Education” in Virginia. He was Worshipful Master of the Woodland Heights Masonic Lodge #345. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (today) at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road (Rte. 10).
