I’m not sure if that’s the result of a hunger for entertainment or information, but the hint of drama is too tempting to resist. From the beginning of this year’s series of debates, it was clearly evident that a change in format was in effect, with audience participation, applause and cheering welcomed. It made the debates more engaging, and, no doubt, created a better television environment likening it more to a competition than a discussion. At first I was annoyed with the constant delays caused by audience… Read more... Published: Jan 26, 2012 County leads region in economic development America’s recovery from one of the worst economic downturns since the Great Depression is a process that is slow and still painful for many who are still unemployed or underemployed. A reduction in jobless claims or a slight upturn in business activity means little to the worker who can’t meet his mortgage payment or pay the car payment. To him, the recovery can’t come fast enough − and sometimes it’s difficult to find good news in a slow moving economy. While other counties in our area are still experiencing the economic funk, most will agree the… Read more... Published: Jan 19, 2012 Changes on the horizon for U.S. Postal Service? I heard an interesting conversation last week regarding the U.S. Postal Service and its current condition, a company facing numerous challenges that could result in reduced service to millions of Americans. One of my neighbors expressed a desire to keep the Postal Service the same. In short, she’s used to her Saturday delivery and the sight of the reliable mail carrier offers a daily sense of security for her. Another neighbor said he couldn’t care less if the Postal Service stopped delivering mail on Saturdays. “In my opinion, they stopped delivering… Read more... Published: Jan 13, 2012 For lawmakers, it’s back to work in Richmond Sometimes, downtown Richmond seems like millions of miles away. This week, legislators from across the state return to the Capitol to discuss, debate and pass a variety of bills, most of which none of us will even hear of. The distance of state government can sometimes lead us to believe the decisions made during the General Assembly session don’t really affect us at a local level. Nothing could be further from the truth. Budget cuts, social issues, land use and transportation are just a few of the issues facing this year’s session. Even with the hurried schedule and… Read more... Published: Jan 05, 2012 The driver’s right to chatter A recent National Transportation and Safety Board recommendation caught my attention for several reasons, and the more I examined it, the more it reinforced my belief that common sense is sadly lacking from many administrative decisions. In a press release issued shortly before Christmas, the NTSB recommended a total ban on using cell phones or other electronic devices while operating a vehicle. While the recommendation is non-binding and carries no legal enforcement authority, it does place states under a certain amount of pressure to follow the recommendations. For example, future road… Read more... Published: Dec 29, 2011 New hope, new promises New Year’s resolutions are kind of like opinions — everyone has one. That doesn’t stop most of us from making promises to ourselves each year to improve or enhance our lives, or, better yet, the lives of the people closest to us. It doesn’t matter that most of these revelations never come to pass, and, once New Year’s Day passes, so does the commitment to change. Taking stock of our shortcomings is an important exercise in self-examination, and as difficult as it is to adhere to some of these self-made promises, it’s important to make the effort… Read more... Published: Dec 22, 2011 Yes, Virginia. Santa still alive and well The more Christmases I observe, the more I believe that some things just can’t be improved. The dignified subtlety of a nativity scene or the excitement of a Christmas parade are traditions that need no improvement or change. And who would argue the joy in a child’s eye on Christmas morning is a moment that needs no adjustment. It’s a season of tradition, and families find the magic of the season lives on in these long-held acts of holiday cheer. Last week, my 9-year old daughter came to me with an inquiry.“Daddy, some of my friends told me there is no Santa Claus,”… Read more...
