Help kick out hunger at Saturday’s Kickers’ game Published: July 29, 2010 Content courtesy of Shelly Sowers/Richmond Kickers The Richmond Kickers return to City Stadium on Saturday, July 31 to host the Harrisburg City Islanders and Pro Pass Buddy Night at 7 p.m. Pro Pass Holders are invited to bring a buddy to the game free of charge. In addition, the Kickers and MARTIN’S Food Markets are teaming up with the Central Virginia Food Bank to Kick Out Hunger. Donate non-perishable food items at the gate and receive a coupon for $5 off admission. The first day of summer has come and gone, and that means many low-income children in the Richmond community are now without the nutritious breakfast and lunch meals they received at school each weekday. The consequences of this change can be significant, both in cognitive and physical growth. The Central Virginia Food Bank fights hunger in the region by providing food and grocery products to an extensive network of partner agencies who serve our most vulnerable neighbors. The Food Bank also prepares and delivers hot, healthy meals to at-risk children in summer/afterschool programs and backpacks filled with weekend meal items for school children in need. These programs feed thousands of people in 31 counties and 5 cities in Central Virginia. The Kickers enter Saturday’s match-up in second place in the standings with a 7-5-5 record and 26 points. Edging the Pittsburgh Riverhounds last week, 1-0, seats the Kickers five points clear of the third-place Riverhounds and nine points ahead of the City Islanders, who bring a 4-7-5 record to Richmond this weekend. Aside from a berth to the postseason, the USL-2 runner-up is guaranteed a home semifinal fixture prior to the championship bout. With just three regular season games remaining, the Kickers need every point to secure City Stadium for the semifinals. |
