Monacan sails past Huguenot Published: February 19, 2010 By Sara Page, Midlothian Exchange The second-ranked Monacan boys’ basketball team went on a 9-0 run early in the second quarter enroute to a 66-58 Dominion District Tournament semifinal win over third-ranked Huguenot Thursday night. The Chiefs combined strong outside shooting from Brad Reister with the powerful inside presence of Sean Armstrong and Derrick Cates for the win. Cates got the Chiefs’ first scoring run going with a jumper on the Chiefs offensive end and a block on the defensive end to pull the team out to a 14-12 lead. Riester nailed a 3-pointer from the top left side of the key and added two more when he pulled down a defensive rebound and went coast-to-coast on a fast break. The shots opened a seven-point lead for the Chiefs and forced a Huguenot timeout. Scoring woes continued for Huguenot as Anthony Brown stole the inbounds pass coming out of the time out and sent a pass ahead to Armstrong, who was fouled and hit both free throws. Monacan went on an 8-0 scoring run to end the half. Despite the 3-point shooting clinic put on by Huguenot, Monacan never trailed. The Falcons hit eight 3-pointers with four coming from Keith Crawford and two each from Trevor Williamson and Charon Harper. Monacan was led by Armstrong with 21 points and 10 rebounds, Cates added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Riester added 17 points. Crawford led Huguenot with 20 points; Sean Brown added 13; and Williamson put up 10. Monacan will take on Cosby in tonight’s Dominion District Tournament final. The Titans were 54-51 winners over L.C. Bird in the other tournament semifinal. |
