Knee pain a cause for some concern Published Aug 12, 2010 Question: My son is a receiver on his high school football team. In that position, he is often jumping to make a catch or changing directions quickly as he runs routes or to avoid other players. At the end of last season, he complained of knee pain and stiffness, which he said occurred right around the kneecap. The pain went away during the off-season. With another football season around the corner, I am wondering how we can tell if this is a bigger problem and what we should be looking… Plantar fascitis a common foot problem Published Jun 17, 2010 Question: I began running about a year ago and have really enjoyed the sport. I had been steadily increasing my frequency and mileage until recently when I began experiencing pain in my heel and along the arch of my foot. It is typically worse in the morning when I wake up and subsides a little throughout the day but becomes aggravated again when I run. Have I done something serious or will this go away as I readjust to my latest increase in mileage? Answer: This sounds like… Knee concerns carry many answers Published Jun 03, 2010 Question: I am concerned about my knees. I have recently been doing more and more distance riding and have been noticing some discomfort after riding. What are the long-term effects of knee injuries? Answer: This is a difficult question to answer since I do not know the details of your old football… ‘Turf toe’ can be painful Published May 19, 2010 Question: My son plays soccer and has developed severe soreness and swelling near the ball of his foot. Answer: Turf toe occurs with a sudden hyperextension of the big toe where it connects to the foot. Hyperextension means that it bends severely (i.e. toe pointing… PCL injury the less common kin to ACL Published May 06, 2010 Question: We hear a lot about ACL injuries. I read an article recently that mentioned a PCL injury. How do the two differ in symptoms, treatment and recovery time? Answer: Ligaments are strong, cord-like tissues that connect one bone to another and function to stabilize the joint. The knee has four primary ligaments. The anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments (ACL and PCL) are located in the center of the knee joint. Both are attached between the femur (thigh bone) and… Source of shin pain varies Published Apr 22, 2010 Question: I am a runner and was forced inside on the treadmill more than normal this past winter and spring due to the weather. I noticed a lot of pain in the area of my shins. A friend suggested I might have “shin splints.” What are shin splints? What causes them? How can I prevent them? Answer: The term “shin splints” is often used to describe any pain along the lower leg. When patients come to my office with this complaint, I think of three main… Youth overuse injuries Published Mar 31, 2010 Question: Which youth sports are most prone to over-use injuries? Why? Is there a “good” age to begin specializing in one sport or position? Answer: I am not aware of any specific sport placing youth athletes at a higher risk of overuse injuries than another sport. Any sport at any age can result in overuse injuries. The most important factor in preventing these problems is an appropriate program for conditioning and stretching. This is true for both children and… Concussions should be taken seriously Published Mar 16, 2010 Question: During the recent General Assembly session there was discussion of changing rules governing high school athletics.
