Trinity dominates at field hockey invitational
Sep 02, 2010

By Jim McConnell
special correspondent

After watching her players repeatedly squander scoring opportunities during the first half Tuesday against Prince George, Trinity Episcopal field hockey coach Margie Snead knew the Titans’ 2-0 lead should’ve been much larger.

Trinity added two more goals in the second half to complete a 4-0 victory and reach the final of its own four-team, season-opening invitational tournament.

Still, Snead wasn’t satisfied.

While Prince George and Colonial Heights squared off in the consolation game, Snead gathered her team together in the student commons and emphasized the fundamentals that so often make the difference between merely generating chances to score and… Continue »

Wanted: Referees for field hockey, girls’ lacrosse
Aug 09, 2010

By Amanda Galloway
Special Correspondent

With the fall season of high school sports just around the corner, a growing referee shortage among field hockey and girls’ lacrosse is reaching a level of urgency.

“It has gotten to the point that I’ll have to have people change days of the game because we won’t have enough referees,” Anne Freund, the commissioner for Central Virginia Field Hockey, said.  “Field hockey season is just now starting, and both public and private high schools are in need.  It is a growing problem.”

Freund, who has been refereeing for over 40 years, said the shortage has been constant over the past few seasons for both field hockey and girls’… Continue »

Another chapter played out in the lives of brothers Connor and Gavin Paul this year; and they seem to be writing the book on success.

In one year, the brothers won, not one but two, State championship games, earned two conference- and three state-level awards, and set four school records.

Yet, the two remain as down-to-earth and mutually supportive as they were in the last chapter.

The Paul brothers held State championship trophies as athletes, on both the varsity football and baseball teams, at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot Catholic School during the 2009-2010 seasons, which will make for a lot of stories around the grill as they get older. But almost overshadowing the… Continue »

Club squad a melting pot of area school teams

To call the Kickers U15 Elite girls’ soccer team a melting pot of the microcosm that is the local soccer scene is no stretch of the imagination.

The team welcomes representatives from nine Richmond area high schools on both sides of the river. Though one would think playing against each other during the high school season might prove harmful, the team is no less unified when they’re back on the same side of the ball for the travel/club fall and summer seasons.

“We all get along really well, and when we all play each other in high school it’s really fun,” co-captain Alyson Brown said.

“We always go the hardest against each other,”… Continue »

One inning of wildness costs Cosby
Jun 15, 2010

By Eric Kolenich
Media General News Service

With each pitch they threw, the frustration mounted for the Cosby Titans. Time and again, the ball hummed toward home plate, catcher Luke Lowery caught it, and held it out for an instant in his mitt. And each time, the umpire stood there like a statue, completely motionless.

Ball.

For one inning, the strike zone must have felt a hundred feet away for Cosby’s pitchers. They walked six batters in the third, allowing seven Woodbridge runs to cross the plate. The Titans never recovered. Woodbridge defeated Cosby 9-4, eliminating the Titans from the group AAA state semifinals.

Woodbridge (27-0) played West Springfield in the Virginia High School League Group AAA state… Continue »
