Suffocating defense fuels Chiefs’ success
Jan 26, 2012

One sequence early in the fourth quarter of last Thursday’s Dominion District game against Clover Hill perfectly encapsulated the attitude Larry Starr has instilled in his Monacan High girls basketball players.

The Chiefs led by 24 points and were well on their way to maintaining an unbeaten record against district competition. But that mattered little to Micaela Parson after she knocked the ball away from the Cavaliers’ Bria Carlisle near the midcourt stripe.

Carlisle scrambled to retrieve the ball. So did Parson, launching herself headlong onto the floor before alertly flipping the ball to teammate Raven Williams for a breakaway layup.

Parson’s incredible… Continue »

Running is new passion for local woman
Jan 26, 2012

Richmond SportsBackers

For Midlothian YMCA 10k Training Team member Gina Gentilini, running hasn’t always been a part of her life; it’s a passion she has discovered rather recently.

Gentilini first became involved in the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue10k last year when her neighbor asked if she would join her in the community event.  The 39-year-old completed the 6.2-mile race in one hour and 13 minutes.

“A 10k is something that had always been on my bucket list, so I went for it,” she said.

The looks on her boyfriend and mother’s faces as she crossed the finish line last April are images that remain with her to this day.  Ever since then, Gentilini… Continue »

Roundball renaissance
Jan 25, 2012

Khris Lane, in his first year at Trinity Episcopal, has become big man on campus … that is, if you don’t count TitanTron.

Lane is a bouncy, agile 6-foot-6 junior who dominates inside, outside and on every floorboard in between.

TitanTron is the school’s dark, menacing 9-foot-6 mascot who looks like he’s stepped off the page of a Marvel Comics superhero magazine.

Lane is arguably the Prep League’s most intimidating big man. “Tron,” hovering at end lines, makes Darth Vader look like a cuddly kitten, by comparison.

And that’s not all first-year coach Rick Hamlin has going for him on the south slope of the James River.

New offense makes Rapids hard to guard
Jan 23, 2012

By Jim McConnell

When he returned to Chesterfield County and took over as coach of James River’s boys varsity basketball team, Tracy Hamner initially was hesitant to implement the offensive system he learned from his former boss.

Hamner had no doubt that the fundamentals were solid. John Beilein had built consistently successful college programs at Richmond, West Virginia and Michigan by recruiting players that fit his version of the increasingly popular “Princeton offense.”

Given limitations on practice time, Hamner wasn’t sure he’d be able to properly teach the complex system – which emphasizes constant motion, screening and passing – to a bunch of… Continue »

Fearsome foursomes fuel Cosby’s girls track team
Jan 23, 2012

By Fred Jeter

Cosby High shines brightest in races requiring eight legs.

Coach Bryan Still’s Titans have passed the relay baton all the way to the summit of Central Region girls’ track and field.

Cosby won region indoor and outdoor titles last year largely on the effort of its four-girl relays.

“I love the relays – they’re the most fun and exciting,” said junior Jayden Metzger. “Because when you win, you have someone to celebrate with.

“We’re so close; my best friend is the track team.”

Metzger, defending regional champion in the open 500 meters, runs on both the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800 relays for the current Titans.

Trojans’ trio nets all-district honors
Jan 13, 2012

Placing even one player on the all-Dominion District boys volleyball squad is a tremendous accomplishment.

The state’s most competitive boys volleyball district boasts seven state championship squads (and four runners-up) in the 15 years the sport has been officially sanctioned by the Virginia High School League.

For one of the Dominion’s smallest student bodies to produce three first-team all-district selections in the same season was unlikely at best.

But when the seven coach’s picks were announced after Cosby defeated James River in a five-game thriller to win the district tournament, there they were: three Midlothian players – senior outside… Continue »

Jones utilized early struggle as motivation for her career
Jan 13, 2012

How does a girl once advised to pursue a different sport land a scholarship from one of the nation’s top college soccer programs and end her career with more shutouts than anyone else in NCAA history?

Just ask Chantel Jones. The improbable story is hers to tell.

“If you had told me I’d be at this point right now, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Jones said back in November, less than a week before she made two saves in Virginia’s NCAA tournament victory over Long Island and etched her name into the NCAA record book with her 45th career shutout.

“I expected to do great things here, but I didn’t expect to come this far.”

Skye’s the limit for Cavs’ Jefferson
Jan 13, 2012

By Fred Jeter
special correspondent

A newcomer from Florida has the name and the frame (not to mention bloodlines) to provide a boost to Clover Hill High girls hoops.

The sky is the limit for aptly-named sophomore Skye Jefferson, oozing potential from the top of her head (6-foot-1 inches off floor) to the soles of her pink Nikes.

Her family moved back to Chesterfield, from Tampa, Fla., this past August.

“It was nice seeing her walk through the door … Skye has tremendous upside,” said Cavaliers’ coach Jim Wahrman of his precocious 15-year-old sophomore center.

If Wahrman, in his 10th year at CH, was looking for a spark, he may have found a basketball equivalent… Continue »

Trinity senior brings Ryder Cup to Midlothian
Dec 29, 2011

By Fred Jeter

At the top of Chris Kapsak’s Christmas wish list was a golf tournament to call to his own.

Thanks to some of his best friends, he got it.

The Trinity Episcopal School senior went nontraditional this Yuletide season.

Instead of staying comfy-cozy by the fire, sipping eggnog, he lined up a 24-player, two-day golfing event Dec. 18-19, defying Mother Nature.

“The last two years, there was snow on the ground this same weekend,” Kapsak said with a laugh.

The 17-year-old entrepreneur named his inaugural event the Virginia Ryder Cup, but the Cold Bowl might be more appropriate.

The mercury had an uphill battle trying to get out of the 30’s… Continue »
